The Russian Voice Presents: To Life! L’Chaim…Saturday, February 3rd at the Gateway Theatre in Richmond, featuring international performers from Russia, Israel, USA and Canada - Come out and enjoy the performances and a unique documentary with historical footage. This brand new dance party comes to life on Saturday, February 3rd at the Anza Club. The Roots Party will be bringing you highly danceable traditional beats from around the globe, and features a dance performance and a complimentary dance lesson. Ten Strings & A Goatskin - February 4th at the St. James Hall -  Age-old entertainments – sitting around the fire, telling tales – can take on ever-new faces. Young acoustic “power trio” Ten Strings and a Goat Skin from Canada’s Prince Edward Isle know this, transforming tradition with vigor, curiosity, and sparks of goofy humor. They’re inviting a new circle of listeners for sometimes moody, sometimes high-energy set of original and traditional songs. Expanding on the Scottish and Acadian roots of PEI’s traditional music, Ten Strings and a Goatskin weave old-school Franco-Canadian, Breton, Irish, and Scottish tunes with wickedly current grooves and clever quirks, flirting with indie’s best moments.

18th Annual Chutzpah! Festival features awe-inspiring dance, extraordinary theatre, hilarious comedy and globally-celebrated music with world-class performances and workshops by international, Canadian and local artists. Performances at the Norman Rothstein Theatre, Scotiabank Dance Centre, Rickshaw Theatre and Fox Cabaret.


The rich global landscape of music presented this year showcases some of the world’s most exciting musical performers from Israel, Mexico, USA and Canada.  Highlights include; the return of Festival favourite, Israeli singer/songwriter and musician Idan Raichel performing his celebrated Piano-Songs; blurring jazz, rock, mariachi, metal, funk and hip hop, Mexico’s Troker; World-class vocalist Perla Batalla brings her special concert In The House of Cohen, her tribute to the music of her friend and mentor Leonard Cohen; Uri Gurvich Quartet featuring this internationally-acclaimed jazz saxophonist and composer (Israel/USA); local multi-talented Barbara Adler (Canada) makes her festival debut concert with her new band Ten Thousand Wolves, in a double-bill with musician/poet Jake Klar (USA); Toronto’s Beyond the Pale has been making its distinctive brand of boundary-busting Eurofolk fusion for nearly 20 years (Canada); and the World Premiere of Salomé: Woman of Valor, a multi-disciplinary show created by Frank London, esteemed composer and bandleader of Grammy-winning superstars The Klezmatics and Adeena Karasick, Canadian poet and performance artist.

February 18th at Guilt & Co. 1 Alexander in Gastown - Coco Jafro is a hard hitting force to be reckoned with, unifying the masses with their electrified, funky global rhythms. They bring together the schools of Funk, Soul, Jazz and Afro-beat providing a unique sound that flows from a foundation of deep set grooves. Moroccan born, lead guitarist Amine Said’s musical roots provide an exclusive sound with the proven power to instantly synchronize your soul forcing the crowd to bend and sway.

 

February 19th at Guilt & Co. 1 Alexander in Gastown - Zimbamoto is a 5-piece Afro-Fusion ensemble led by Canada’s foremost virtuoso mbira and marimba player, Kurai Mubaiwa and featuring some of Vancouver’s best “world” musicians. Mixing the traditional music of Zimbabwe with electric grooves and heavy beats, they create a hypnotic sound that is uniquely built for the dance floor. They will move you through southern Africa, from the village to the urban street party.

Percussion Workshop every Wednesday with Davide Sampaolo. This workshop series will focus on techniques including Flamenco Cajon (Drum Box), Afro-Cuban percussion, Palos Flamenco, and fusion with Cuban rhythms, clave concept, how to play Cajon in different kind of music and much more. Periodically there will be performances and jamming sessions with all the students of the class. Drop-in $20.
