Una Mas Y Ya Nos Vamos - Locarno

Jericho Beach

Tom Landa is one of those rare talents who cannot only lyricize in both English and Spanish; he can contextualize the words musically with authentic cultural reference. Locarno may be the name of a beach in his hometown of Vancouver but the project rings with true Jarocho rhythms from Veracruz on the Mexican Gulf. Surrounded by the finest of BC's Latin musicians, Locarno's debut percolates with warmth and groove. Deep, contemporary production comes courtesy of collaboration between Juno winners, Tom Landa and Joby Baker, whose production contributions have also vaulted BC’s other global music Juno–winner Alex Cuba to such acclaim. Alex’s twin, Andonis Puentes by the way, adds his voice to the album opener, Candela. Joby Baker helps put the twist in Locarno’s tradition with some fine south of the boarder twang electric reminiscent of Manual Galban, Raul Malo and Joe Ely. Check out the instrumental Bailando Bajo El Sol (Dancing under the Sun). There are only 7 tracks on this fresh, new expression which makes the title Una Mas Y Ya Nos Vamos (One more and then we’ll go) even more of a tease. Locarno are bound to soar on the festival stage with a powerhouse live ensemble surrounding Tom including Paperboy alumnus Nick La Riviere on trombone, Kalissa Hernendez on violin and Vancouver’s most in-demand Cuban trumpeter, the great Miguelito Valdez.
