April 6th through 8th at the Scotia Dance Centre:

Themes of time and memory inspire Mozongi, a spellbinding contemporary African dance work created by internationally-acclaimed Montreal choreographer Zab Maboungou. Mozongi (‘return’) is performed by a dynamic ensemble of five dancers and two percussionists. The electrifying dancing and drumming radiate energy and purpose: this piece emanates wisdom, heart and spirit!

April 6th at the St. James Hall: It all comes down to common sense according to The Nordic Fiddlers Bloc. The melding of virtuoso fiddle playing from Norway, Sweden, and Shetland to create a very specific, unique sound, that at the same time illustrates their own individual musical traditions. The three fiddle players involved are Olav Luksengård Mjelva from Norway, Anders Hall from Sweden, and Kevin Henderson from Shetland. Each one in their own right internationally regarded for their fiddle playing, but when the three come together to form that Nordic trio, things take off on a fresh path. See them with the Andrew Collins Trio, a Rogue Folk Presentation.

April 14th at the St. James Hall - Folk powerhouse pair The Small Glories are Cara Luft & JD Edwards, a dynamic duo planted on the Canadian prairies. They are a study in contrasts; Cara, all earth mother on her 21-speed bike, environmentally friendly and wholesome, ebullient and engaging; and burly JD, in scruffy beard, ball cap, t-shirt and jean jacket, slightly intimidating (until you meet him). At first glance few would peg them for a highly creative musical partnership. Yet these two veteran singer/songwriters have teamed up and are building a buzz around their tight harmonies, authenticity and visceral performances.
