January 20th

The Cap Jazz Series is pleased to present genre-bending powerhouse jazz trio The Bad Plus on Friday, January 20, 2017 at 8 PM at the BlueShore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts at Capilano University. The Bad Plus features Ethan Iverson on piano, Reid Anderson on bass and Dave King on drums.

Few jazz groups in recent memory have amassed such acclaim, and inspired such controversy, as The Bad Plus. For over a decade, they have thrived at the intersection of jazz, indie rock and contemporary classical music, inspiring Rolling Stone to call them "about as badass as highbrow gets." On Made Possible, the group's 8th studio album, The Bad Plus unleashed spellbinding original compositions that showcased everything this groundbreaking trio is capable of: heart-pounding acoustic anthems, bleary melancholia, fearless juxtapositions, tunefully mathematic contortions and a masterful sense of song. From first listen, it's the sound of three gifted players and composers at a dizzying creative peak, proving yet again that a piano-bass-drums trio can still transport listeners to rapturous and uncharted places.

The Cap Jazz Series is pleased to present retro-hip global group Banda Magda on Sunday, January 29, 2017 at 8 PM at St. James Hall. The band features Magda Giannikou on accordion/ vocals, Ignacio Hernandez on guitar, Andres Rotmistrovsky on bass/ vocals & Keita Ogawa on percussion/ vocals.

Founded by Greek-born singer, film scorer, and composer Magda Giannikou, Banda Magda moves from samba to French chanson, from Greek folk tunes to Colombian cumbia and Afro-Peruvian lando. Their songs capture the best of mid-century pop ballads and cinematic arranging, drawing on the band's global background and unchained musicality. Trained in film scoring at Berklee, Giannikou's film music finesse has won her awards and caught the attention of everyone from Kronos Quartet, to Snarky Puppy to Louis CK (she sang a duet with CK for the comedian's TV show).
