Around the World In Five Concerts

June 23
Vogue Theatre

Born in a Brooklyn warehouse, but with ancestry that traces back to Fela Kuti’s legendary Afrika Shrine club in Lagos, Nigeria, Antibalas’ Afrobeat wig-outs are legendary. With Nigerian harmonies and heavy drumbeats, elements of Ghanaian highlife, including a killer horn section; and a crazy-tight vibe honed through their time as the pit band for Fela! The Musical and years of touring, Antibalas concerts are the ultimate sweaty dance parties, with a side of social consciousness.

By the way, the Vogue has a big dance floor for the show, so no worries about staying in your seat.

June 23rd through June 25th

June 23rd to July 2nd

June 25th

Join World Beat Canada’s Cal Koat in welcoming a dance floor-igniting preacher of love, Omar Souleyman to The Imperial on June 25th. He brings his “irresistible, hyperactive electronica” (The Guardian) to Vancouver for a night of undulating synths, intense beats, and hip-shaking sensory overload! An unlikely cult hero among electronic connoisseurs like Modeselektor, Gilles Peterson, and Four Tet (who produced his breakthrough album Wenu Wenu), the 50-year-old Syrian began as a wedding singer and has recorded over 500 albums based on the Levantine dance music Dabke. There’s comfort in Souleyman’s unifying theme of love. This is, after all, dance music’s virtue: to dissolve us in time and space, building bridges where previously there were only walls.

June 26th

Join World Beat Canada’s Cal Koat in welcoming Ziggy Marley to the stage of The Vogue Theatre on June 26th as part of Around The World In Music @ the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

Thievery Corporation

June 29, Orpheum Theatre, 8:00pm
$95 - $110 All In

Rob Garza and Eric Hilton, aka Thievery Corporation, have thrived for 20 years without a radio hit, a big budget video, or major label backing. Regardless, TC has managed to do high-profile TV appearances, sell millions of albums, and continue to expand the fan base worldwide. They’ve collaborated with such luminaries as David Byrne, The Flaming Lips, Femi Kuti, and Bebel Gilberto. Since 1996, Garza and Hilton have virtually defined an entire sub-genre of electronic music. And now, they’re ready to embark on yet another journey with the release of their new album, The Temple of I & I. This monster mash aggregate will put you in the groove with a massive live band.

Renowned producer and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Lanois brings his live show to the Commodore on July 5. Get tickets
